北 - THE END - 京

18:30 - I take the train to BeiJing. Sebastian is already in Nanjing and good on his way to find an appartment to rent.

It's a good thing i came a bit early. I caught the train in the very last second. It left at 18:20 .. ten minutes before the actual skedule. The first person is see in the train had gigantic fingernails. What's with the guys here having big fingernails? I don't get it... This guy had Claws man. I mean real sharp fucking Freddy Kruegger, Scissor Man kind of fingernails. I heard they use them to clean the wax in their ears. mmmmmmm
nice nice.

The guy sitting right next to me was also from the Beijing University, in the third year. He told me a lot of interesting stuff about economy man. (the guy studies economy).
I ate spicy chicken leg in the train. I've never had spicy chicken leg before... it was spicy. :P

The guy ... whose name i forgot, sorry...was talking and talking and talking. I wanted to read my book. I spent an hour and a half on one page because he didn't let me concentrate. But he was a cool guy, i didn't mind.
It's really interesting to watch the people in the train. Employees from the chinese railway come in the wagons all the time and try to sell stuff... people sleeping on the floor... sleeping under the chairs... sleeping on other people... Whenever i go for a smoke, or go to the toilet, there are 40 heads rising up from behind their chairs and look at you as if you were a circus monkey that can talk.

6 in the morning ...
the guy shakes me to wake up. "Wake up man.. we're here!" ... "What? i thought the train will arrive at six in the evening" ... there were only twelve hours from XiAn to BeiJing.

I checked in the WADDA! Hostel. It's cool here. They have a Bruce Lee logo for the hostel. I met another german guy from Munich here.
The reception girl reminds me of Jule .. a friend of mine from Munich. She didn't give me any key for my room. She said: whenever you need to open the door come to the reception and I will give it to you.
And so i did.....
I went in the hallway to take a shower... and as always, i forgot my towel and my clothes in my room. i only had my underwear. The door to my room was closed....

We've reached our last destination. Tomorow we check in the dormitories in the Beijing 大学.
And that's that....

______________________________________________________

Throughout our journey from Munich to our last destination we've only spent 200 Euros each ....
We've met many amazing people, good people
We saw things that we never thought we will ever see
We saw different cultures and customs of the coutries that we went through
We challenged ourselves
We had fun
we lived man......

Many Thanks to all the ones that helped us throughout our trip and made it interesting.

With sincere respects and appreciation

Song of the Post

a hot girl playing guzheng

Caves, gigantic Buddha and Stone Soldiers

After writing the last post... i started hanging out with the chinese people in the hostel. They were nothing like the picture i had about a chinese perosn before. You know... small shy nerdy looking , always hanging on the computer playing WOW ... going to bed at 9 o clock and afraid to speak with anybody.

These guys were awesome man. They showed me some magic tricks with poker cards and with cigarettes... they were playing guitar and were talking and laughing the whole night. Later they asked me if i want to smoke bong with them. Bong isn't my thing though. We talked on chinese the whole night.

We took a train to DongHuang the next day. The train went through the Taklamakan Desert. I've never seen a desert before, except in Tv. Seeing it with your own eyes and being in the middle of it is a totally different feeling.

In the train

I've seen more of the chinese customs that we do not find normal in Germany. Still in the train, i've been woken up by an old guy who was spitting his lungs out every 5 minutes. Nobody seemed to be bothered about it.
Even girls spit here. In the train station we were waiting for the train and a lady walked past us. All of a sudden she stops .. spits a green goo out of her mouth and then walks again as if nothing happened.

I guess what must come out must come out.

A taxi took us through the desert again 200 KM to the Caves and back. The guy was an asshole... he wanted 600 Yuan from us. We gave him the money or else we would miss the train further to XiAn. Fuck him! Taxi driverswant to rip you off everywhere, not only in China.
So, if you ever go with a taxi in China, tell them to turn on the Taxometer, or whatever that funky machine is called.

The caves in Donghuang
DAMN! I just saw a humongous Buddha. His big toe was about the size of my upper body. He was built in one of the caves.
There were places to live and temples sculpted in the mountains. I saw this on tv once when i was a kid.
It seemed a big bigger on TV. But it was impressive.

Train to Xi AN
We were really happy to find tickets for Xi An.
Well... there is always a catch to every good thing.
The good part was.. that we found the train and that a day after we will arrive.
The bad part, we only noticed it when we got inside the train.
24 hours until Xi An - 无座   .... which means standing places.

The train to xi an - it looked like those trains from India, where there are so many people that some have to stand on the train.
Well, i'd like to say something good about this experience but it was shit man.

I slept on the floor and had to get up every time somebody was coming through with a big bag, or the nice fat lady with the wagon full of FangBianMian and drinks was passing by to sell her stuff.
Well ... every experinence is a good experience if you see it from the right perspective.
I played cards with some chinese guys and we practiced out chinese a lot.

..............................................we have to take a shower again. we smell funky

西安

It's nice to stretch your legs on the street. God damn! i never knew that just a simple action like walking would make me feel so good. After twenty hours of compact train riding... a little walk and fresh air was better than ..... well i can't think of anything... but it was awesome.

We went to the Xiangzimen hostel. I didn't like it so much. it looked like a hotel and the people weren't so chilled as in Urumqi. They were using that distant politeness that i really dislike.
I washed my clothes again, but two days after that they werre still wet. Right now they are still wet in my bagpack.

XiAn is really beautiful. If i ever come to china to work, i want to go to XiAn. It's very modern, but not western... it still has this chinese touch to it. The city is 3500 years old. It used to be the Capital of China in an earlyer dinasty. The old part of the city is surrounded by Towers and big walls.

Tomorow Sebastian and I will take different roads. He's going to Nanjing. I'll be hanging around for a semester in Beijing. So, i guess we have to celebrate.
After cleaning up we went out for a snack.
With full bellies we walked past a massage place. And then we walked back to the massage place.
105 Yuan for 100 minutes. Why not.
Let's just say it was exactly what we needed...

There was a party street right next to the Hostel. Full of bars on every side. In front of every bar there was an angry chinese guy who was yelling at you to choose his bar.
Basti and I decided to go in three bars and drink one in each.
We didn't plan for what happended next.

After two hours we were still in the second bar surrounded by chinese people who were pouring us beer and what not in our glasses. We met a group of law students with their teacher ... they were out drinking. The teacher was drunk as hell and always talking to us. We sang Karaoke. Every bar had live music.
I'm seeing beautiful girls everywhere.. but it seems that only dudes come to me and say "Ni hen shuai de!"..  and that's weird.

The next day

Sebastian leaves to Nanjing in the morning.
After waking up ... i go buy a Marker from the supermarket and then start writing on the walls of the Hostel. That's one cool thing about hostels man.. you can leave your mark behind.

Terracota Army of Xi An

Now this i would have never thought i'd see with my own eyes. I saw this in tv and read about it in the magazines. It was discovered in the 70's by some farmers. The Pottery soldiers dated back from the Qin dinasty. There were three pits discovered until now. Hundreds of soldiers (from archers to foot soldiers.. horses, carriages, bowmen to generals) were dug out. All soldiers have their own unique face. what a majestic view.
I'll put in some pictures later...

I love chinese food man. I got a beer belly right now...

找呀找呀找找。。。包子

what a great feeling... jesus!

i am happy to be here!

Good old three wheel cars ..
good old negotiating for a pair of socks ...
good old gigantic buildings...
good old funy sun-hats and sun umbrellas...
good old Chang Bai Shan shitty cigarettes...
good old dirty restaurants with amazing foods...
good old driving like in the jungle...
good old cheap taxis....
good old weird asian commercials...

twenty years ago, people started rebuilding china. Today you see a big difference. There are Banks everywhere.. new streets, motorways, tall buildings.... and somehow it didn't become western... still stayed chinese. Construction workers everywhere... you can feel the country is growing

The bus took us over the mountains to the first lake.
What it was called.. i forgot... but you'll see some pictures soon. Sayram Hu or something like that.
You can still see Yurtas (Kasach nomad houses) everywhere.
This was the most dangerous place of our trip. We got out of the bus right next to the Yurtas..
Chinese Nomads started running after us... they were really insistent man... almost convinced us too.
"Stay in my tent ovenight... eat at my tent today.. it's gonna rain and you won't get far on the road .. stay at my tent tonight etc etc"

After a while they gave up.. and we walked until we couldn't see the Yurtas anymore.

And right there we stopped... next to the lake.. What a beautiful place.
It started geting dark so we pu up our own tent, 10 meters away from the water. It wasn't so cool as a Yurta tent but it was allright. We put our whole stuff inside the tent. At that moment both of us were thinking
"Fuck! they're going to rob us until we're naked."
I always wanted to hitchhike naked... just to see the reaction of the people.

That fucking tent man... it was made out of two layers. The overlyer was made out of somekind of hard material and everytime the wind blew.. it sounded like footsteps outside the tent.
We went to sleep at eleven... i fell asleep at four in the morning...fucking tent overlayer!
 we woke up at six.
The sun was just coming up.
What an amazing view! It was the bluest lake i have ever seen in my life. Mountains all around... Yurta people still sleeping. it was exactly the place i've always wanted to wake up to.

We came to BoLe by hitch-hiking in a truck.
BoLe - we had our very first chinese Meal. It was awesome.

From there on - to Urumqi .. in a Youth Hostel named White Birch Youth Hostel.
If you ever come here.. check it out. It has a cool common room.
I am never going to live in a Hotel. There, they always treat you with a distant politeness which i very dislike.
Every time we went to a hostel we haven't met any person that was unfriendly.
It's 4 o clock in the morning righ now... some chinese dude showed me some magic tricks with playing cards and with cigarettes. Pretty neat! The people here are really easy going and relaxed. They have a hilarious sense of humour.
We spoke chinese with them for almost two hours. I think they understood us... because they were saying yes all the time, even when we asked them how the winter is in Urumqi.
We met other people here, who drive their bikes for gigantic distances. There's a guy from Australia who came all the way here on his bike... his final destination will be South America.

Before the Hostel... you could smell our dirty clothes through the plastic bag and through the backpack...
We looked like two neanderthals.
After the Hostel ... we look like two shaved neanderthals with clean clothes and full stomachs.

i met a vietnamese girl ... from australia .. here in china in the hostel. she had the smallest nose i've ever seen. I've never heard an asian speaking english with an australian accent before. She sounded cool. She reminds me of somebody i know

Blogspot.. youtube.. facebook... are all forbidden in China. After a couple of hours we found a way to bypass this censorship shit.

We're going to spend another night in the hostel. Next stop the Donghuang Caves.......

The rest is history...

Borat was wrong

Kasachstan man ... what an amazing place

We came to the border 8 hours before we could get in

so we waited... and waited ... and waited at the border.

We left Russia with a big smile on our face. There were more and more asians at the border.
Nobody speaks english there... we don't speak russian. so we had to get along with the people playing the Pantomime.

No man's Land

It's crazy man.. on this trip i found out that between every country there is an empty space that doesn't belong to anybody. You go out from Russia and 3 Kilometers later.. you go in Kasachstan through the border. Inbetween you just have to be careful. people can rob you or beat you and they would get away with it.. because No man's land doesn't have any laws.
A guy from Kasachstan took us in his car and drove us the whole way to the kasachstan border...
He told us: guys, you should book a plane ticket and get out of kasachstan as soon as possible. Don't hitch-hike, because it is dangerous... and tickets for a train to Almaty you will not find anymore.
Well.........

Our Visa started on the 13th of August and ended on the 16th. We were at the border of Kasachstan on the 12th. The fat police guy at the border said: Sorry... your Visa starts tomorow... so go and try to sleep (in no man's land).

12th of August    9PM:

Sebastian and I are sitting three steps away from Kasachstan. Nothing is between us and the nomad country but a stupid fence and soldiers with guns in their hands .. that just can't wait for one of us to take an illegal step inside so that they can have some target practice.
Sebastian and I decided to hitchhike through the whole country. (almost the same distance that we made until now). By Kasach law.. if you stay longer that your Visa allows you to do... you go to jail.

113th August   00:00 hours

We stand in a long line for the check in. Many people from Usbekistan and Turkistan... curious what these two ugly white guys who really need a shower are doing there. We haven't slept for two days.
The first city we had to go to was Atyrau. Atyrau is 400 km away from the border.
A Taxi will cost more than we have... and we can't hitch hike at 1 o clock in the night...
A family from Kasachstan stops in front of us. Thanks to them we found a bus that goes to Atyrau.

The magic bus

There are no trees on the land... no buildings.. no water... a sea of nothing as far as you can look.
In the bus we started talking to some people. At first sight, they look like they don't want to have anything to do with you but after you talk to them you can see that the Kasachs are very curious and warm people. We spoke to somebody and after 10 minutes of talking he wanted to invite us to his house in Atyrau and let his mom cook for us.

In the Bus we met a great girl. Her name was Ai'amzhan.
In the middle of the way we stopped at a grave of a holy person. It is in the tradition of the Kasachs to stop there and everybody puts a Coin on it and says a Prayer. Still no trees or buildings as far as i can see.
I slept like a baby for three hours until we arrived to Atyrau. When i woke up people were laughing because i slept with my mouth open.

6 AM
We arrive and Ai'mzhan comes with us to the train station to see if there are any more tickets left to Almaty.
It's fucking crazy man... we had so much luck on this journey that i find it hard to beleive it was a coincidence. There were only 2 tickets left for the train to Almaty. 2000 Kilometers... two days by train... 15 Euros a ticket. It's fucking amazing.

We are dead tired. I slept 3 hours in three days... sebastian didn't sleep at all.
The train was leaving at five .. so we had a whole day to hang around.
At the train station, an old cool guy came to us and started talking Kasach to us. We had to play the Pantomime again. His name was Mady.. he was a retired architect. We went and drank tea with him. He was a very cool guy.

Later we met Ai'mzhan. Together with her we went around to see Atyrau for a bit. Kasach people are very proud of their culture and heroes. We saw a couple of statues... saw the national outfit... we heard a bit of Kasach music. That music has rhythm man. you will dance on a kasach song even if you don't like dancing.

Ai'mzhan took us to the border between Europe and Asia. It is in Atyrau. Half of the city is in Europe.. you go over a bridge.. and the other half is in Asia. Ching chang chong bishes...

The first fake markets are here too. You know... where the seller starts yelling at you to buy his fake Armani Shirts.
Ai'mzhan and her friend Elvira took me to a Kasach Restaurant. I ate Bishparmak (translated: five finger food). It was with horse meat. Now, i like horses and i feel sory i ate horse meat, but that thing tasted awesome.
Elvira and Ai'mzhan are two girls full of life man. I really want to party sometimes with them. I liked listening to the way they were talking...
We wish you all the happiness in the world. I was happy to meet you. If you ever come to Germany give me a call.. maybe i will answer it :p... of course i will answer it

Ai'mzhan waited with us until the train arrived. She waved us goodbye and then the train started rolling.

The things we saw from the train can not be put in words. We'll upload some fotos later and just have a look.

It's frustrating not to be able to speak russian. So many people were riding on that train that were eager to talk with us and us with them. We are masters of the Pantomime now...

We stink like hell. we really really really need a shower.
Some people here have golden teeth.. he he. PIMP

Two days later
The train arrives, we jump in the taxi and up we go hitch hiking...
We didn't make it to the border. we found a hostel on the way.
A very nice guy named Yerlan took us around until we found a place to stay. And when i mean around i mean 40 minutes of just driving around a city to find a good place to sleep. The city was full of criminality and also the only city where casinos were allowed. Yerlan was also an architect. he designed one of them.
Thank you Yerlan. You have a good heart. We wish you all the best...

9 o clock in the morning...
We hitch hike until Jarkent... it's 50 KM close to the border. We go through the mountains. They are far more different than the Alps in Germany. It was and amazing view.

Jarkent
We have no more Tengel (Kasach money) in our pockets and just a few hours to go until our Visa expires. We see a bus that goes to Urumqi (China).
"Hello.. are you driving to the Graniza (= Border in russian)? How much would it cost?"
a woman there tells us 1500 Tengel per person.. on russian.
"We only have 500 Tengel for both of us" how long can you take us with that money"
".... sorry ... NO"

as we were trying to find another way to get to the Border. The woman comes to us and says: Ok.. come.. no money ... come!

 Talk about luck!

Border to China

No luggage check ... no waiting.. no problem.
We already made some friends on the bus.
At the border with China we met a guy with a bicicle. He was dirty from head to toes. An englishman...
He rode the bike from Manchester until here.. and he'll go further to New York. He made every single Kilometer of the way on his bicicle. ALL MY RESPECTS MAN. You're awesome

Now.. finally we can speak some sense with the people. The officers from the border of China were really friendly to us. We spoke to them on chinese.. and then they were even more friendly.

Kasachstan... one day I will travel around you with a monstertruck. We'll be great friends you and me...

We are in China

Bobby
